Understanding the water cycle is a core part of the primary curriculum, but translating abstract concepts like evaporation and condensation into memorable, real-world understanding can be a challenge. Tom Harvey, Education Lead at South East Water designed the "Mission: Make Rain!" workshop to bridge this gap, combining essential science with a vital message: why water is a precious resource and how we can protect it. He delivered it to an inspired Year Three and Year Four students at St Mary’s School in Hartfield in May with great success.

The session: Hands-on learning

Designed to be practical, interactive, and memorable, the workshop walked pupils through the key stages of the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.

Rather than just watching a presentation, the children actively led the discovery through discussions and hands-on demonstrations. The highlight of the session saw each child build their own mini "weather system in a bag" to take home, allowing them to watch the water cycle unfold in real-time on their own windowsills.

To anchor these lessons at home, every child received an Aquanaut bag packed with water-saving tools, including:

  • A reusable water bottle and pencil
  • A home shower timer
  • A large water-saving advice magnet for the family fridge

As a lasting legacy for the school’s own sustainability journey, we also gifted the campus a brand-new water butt to harvest rainwater.

A resounding success

Tom Harvey, South East Water Education Lead, delivers a workshop for the students

The students were enthusiastic, thoughtful, and eager to dive into the interactive elements, sparking brilliant conversations about water efficiency and how small actions at home can protect our shared resources.

The school’s Head Teacher, shared just how much the visit meant to both the students and the school's infrastructure: “Thank you so much for the workshop yesterday. The children came out of the classroom absolutely buzzing. It was so lovely for them to have the goodies and their water cycles to take home. Also a huge thank you for our water butt. I was desperately collecting rainwater from our leaking gutter in a bucket, so this is very welcome! We will ensure the children are part of this being fixed to our gutter system to support their understanding of saving rainwater."
