Winter in the UK could mean sub-zero temperatures, wind, rain, ice and snow.

While you're busy getting your team and fleet ready for the colder months, it's just as important to prepare your business's water supply. The freezing and thawing of water in pipes can cause them to burst, leading to costly damage and business disruption.

Here's how to prepare your business for winter and avoid unexpected water issues:

A person fits a tap jacket over an outdoor tap

Insulate, insulate, insulate

Pipes in unheated areas like lofts, basements, and garages are especially vulnerable to freezing. Use lagging or foam insulation to protect them from the cold. This simple and inexpensive measure can prevent the water inside from freezing and expanding, which is what causes pipes to burst.

Don't forget to insulate any outdoor taps as well!

An internal stop tap

Know where your stop tap is

Make sure you and your staff know where the main internal stop tap is and how to turn it off. In the event of a burst pipe, being able to quickly shut off the water supply can save you from significant water damage and a major headache.

Keep the heating on

Even if your business is closed for a period, leaving the heating on low (around 10°C) can prevent the pipes from freezing. This is especially important for properties that might be unoccupied over a weekend or holiday period.

Check for leaks

A small leak can become a big problem when temperatures drop. Regularly inspect all taps, valves, and pipes for any signs of dripping or dampness.

Fixing a minor leak now can prevent a major issue later on.

Clear gutters and drains

Blocked gutters and drains can cause water to build up and freeze, leading to leaks and damp. Make sure they are clear of leaves and other debris to ensure water can drain away freely.
